Aoun Should Move to Afghanistan
Sometimes RPS gets emails from Lebanon, from some who follow the opportunistic Christian now-Syrian-now-pro-western Lord Michel Aoun.
Berating Israel, under the banner of defending Palestinians, or one of the more sophisticated angles “We want the Palestinians to leave Lebanon and go back home” is not new to the region. It happens frequently and comes in many forms. Just like their Lord, the Christian Aounists of Lebanon sometimes get under your skin with their berating.
I believe the answer is for the Christians of Lebanon to suggest to Aoun to move to Afghanistan or Pakistan (Preferably Peshawar) to fully grasp what it means to live amongst people who want to destroy you to get a sense of what a minority lives like in the region. The comforts of the Cedars of Lebanon where democracy, secular Muslims, and established institutions is no laboratory for the future of minorities in the Middle East should they side against other minorities.
Aoun will never get it because his politics is about Aoun. But the Christians of Lebanon will understand.
